Simply put, Edge Of Oblivion: Alpha Squadron 2 is a lot of fun for the price. It’s a space fight game that captures exactly what you’d expect from the genre. While it might not always look quite as glorious as it’d like to (although it still looks pretty good), it feels sufficiently sturdy enough to be the kind of mobile game you’ll want to show off to others.
Don’t bother paying too much attention to your objectives. It’s the usual tale of good star fighter versus evil empire. The main thing, mostly, is to shoot down all your enemies. Edge Of Oblivion: Alpha Squadron 2 puts you through the paces with some tightly designed tutorials. It’ll only take you a few minutes to learn how to control your craft and how to take down your opposition.
Tilt controls are what help you fly around with virtual buttons available for adjusting your speed as well as firing weapons. The controls can be a little sensitive but a calibration option helps here, and it certainly proves immersive. More immersive is switching to the cockpit view, although it’s not always wise when you want the best perspective.
Edge Of Oblivion: Alpha Squadron 2 offers up two campaigns, a dog fight mode, and survival mode, with the second campaign purchasable via an in-app purchase. That’s fairly reasonable value for money, as the first campaign gives you plenty of content on its own. Other in-app purchases center around buying extra weapons but this simply makes the game a little easier, rather than feeling vital if you want to succeed.
As a premium release, Edge Of Oblivion: Alpha Squadron 2 is a pretty good one. Besides some menu slowdown, it rarely misses a beat. It’s satisfying and is a fine example of why there really need to be more space fighter games - it’s a great feeling chasing down opposing star fighters.
