App Description

This is the first major New York museum show to focus on the late work of the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), an often overlooked but central figure in turn-of-the-century art circles, whose works were exhibited at the Vienna Secession. Born in Bern, Hodler took up painting in 1870. He had an abiding love of the natural world and greatly admired the work of Albrecht Dürer, the Northern Renaissance Master.

Ferdinand Hodler: View to Infinity features over seventy-five works by Hodler, including his Symbolist paintings, his powerful portraits, and the landscapes for which he is most famous. Hodler was included in Vienna Secession exhibitions on numerous occasions and had a major impact on Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. His work will be juxtaposed alongside theirs to allow a side-by-side comparison. In addition, a series of intimate photographs of Hodler taken by Gertrud Dübi-Müller yield special insight into the artist’s working methods and his private life as well.

This application includes audio that features interviews with the exhibition’s curator, Jill Lloyd, and commentary from the director of the Neue Galerie New York, Renée Price.
