Modern method tuner
In the past, tuning a piano was as much an art form as it was a technical exercise, but now the balance is swaying more towards the technical and the final result is as good or even better than tuning by ear.
A few simple tools, a iPhone/iTouch with Piano Tuning DIY software is required. The real secret is the tuning software, this makes the whole process extremely easy. It means you do not have to train your ears but just look at the spectrum screen to know when the piano string is in tune.

Piano Tuning DIY software is a Real-time piano spectrum analyser/recorder for iPhone. Piano Tuning DIY samples piano sounds using microphone and then applies a fourier transform to samples to obtain a frequency spectrum. Spectrogram display when recording and replaying.

Please note: When using a 1st generation iPhone the internal microphone limits the sample rate to 8KHz. Using an external microphone or headset allows up to 44KHz sample rate. The iPhone 3G does not suffer this limitation.
