Ever wanted to learn to surf like a pro? Despite living near the sea, I’ve never wanted to due to being a wimp, so Surfy is my ideal pain free way of giving it a shot. It’s kind of like an Endless Runner but with the structure that comes with focusing on performing great tricks.

Controls are simple to learn but tricky to master. Surfing is done automatically with a left and right arrow used to move around or rotate in mid air. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, not feeling truly intuitive, but once it clicks it works well. The key to Surfy is to not overcook a trick. Often, you’ll be going at a steady but not substantial pace so the best thing to do is build up to more impressive tricks as your speed increases.

Surfy helps matters by providing go faster lines to hit, thereby boosting your speed a lot. There are treasure chests to collect, which open up the possibilities of power-ups that go a long way in helping you out. Surfy is reasonably generous with doling these out and they can make all the difference, especially when you’re trying to complete challenges such as flying into space.

These challenges are where the urge to keep playing kick in, as well as the multiplayer mode allowing you to challenge friends. You can unlock new boards too, gradually improving your abilities the more you play. Surfy keeps it fairly simple but the chance of coming across a whale or tornado ensures that it’s interesting. Being able to view and share your tricks after a run is a neat concept, too.

There’s no Game Center support, which seems like a bizarre omission, but otherwise Surfy is a fairly enjoyable game. It’ll take some practice to master but there’s nothing quite like finally pulling off a string of great tricks.
