Roller Rally Review

Roller Rally has really good level design, but disappointing controls. Since players only control jumping, the game isn’t as engaging as it could be.

Roller Rally is a 2D side-scrolling racer with really good level design, but suffers from mediocre controls. Hard-core racing game fanatics will definitely not be pleased with it simple and limited controls, but it could appeal to a casual gamer looking for two-minute fix.

Let me start with the good. The best thing about Roller Rally is the level design. Most levels are designed very well and have interesting obstacles and components. For instance there are cannons that launch skaters forward, poles to grind on, and ramps that do loops. Some of the obstacles include boxes and spike. There are 15 levels in total and they are divided into multiple parts of the map, each with a unique theme.

My biggest dislike about Roller Rally is the controls. Skaters automatically skate forward and all players control is jumping. There are two different control schemes available for players to choose. The first, the “one touch mode,” only has an up arrow button on screen. Tapping it causes the skater to jump and holding causes the skater to flip. The advanced mode in contrast has three buttons on screen: a jump button, a rotate left button, and a rotate right button. In both modes, tapping while the skater is already in the air preforms a double jump. Also, while the racer is on the ground, tapping repeatedly make the animal get up faster.

Since Roller Rally is 2D and skaters automatically move forward, movement is mainly restricted to just jumping. Rotating and doing flips does give a bonus, but flips aren’t necessary. There are golden carrots hidden throughout levels that players can try to get and which unlock some characters. The points that are earned aren’t redeemable for anything; they’re just there to keep score. Coins are also floating in levels and an in game store where points or coins could be spent would give them more of a purpose.

There are four different skaters, each of which is an animal. All of the racers look really weird. They are not drawn badly by any means, but the clothing and look of all the skaters is strange. For instance the rabbit is wearing pink-rimmed star glass and looks like it’s sewn down the middle, and the octopus is wearing a boat anchor necklace.
