Asase Yaa in Action Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation (AYCAF) creates and nurtures pathways for heightened self-awareness and educational enlightenment for the children, adults, seniors, and families that it services. AYCAF has four core programs: Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater Asase Yaa School of the Arts Asase Yaa Children’s Arts Camp Asase Yaa T.E.A.C.H. These programs are housed at the Asase Yaa Center for the Arts, located in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn at 1803 Fulton Street. Open in 2012, The Center also serves as an affordable event space for the community-at-large. It hosts lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, book-signings, parties, and other events. The History of Asase Yaa Prior to the establishment of AYCAF, Yao Ababio founded the Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater (AYAADT) in the summer of 2001. AYAADT created bold but authentic productions that bought the uniqueness of African dance to the American stage. Asase Yaa was created to bring joy to audiences through exciting and colorful presentations. Gathering accomplished and inspired young dancers and drummers, Ababio established a respected company of seasoned musicians, dancers and vocalists with training in various disciplines. Their skill and experience allow AYAADT to conceive and present authentic, powerfully beautiful performances conveying the richness of the African Diaspora in and full concerts that showcase an array of experiences thus depicting the true richness of. AYAADT have traveled to various countries including Japan, Korea, Paris, Amsterdam, Iceland, Ghana, Guinea, and Angola and other nations. With such community support and positive reception resulting from each production despite limited arts funding and current national economic hardship, Asase Yaa has expanded and now consists of four components: a professional dance theatre company, a school of the arts, a children’s summer arts camp, and an arts in education program also known as AY T.E.A.C.H. Each of these programs has an outstanding impact on the participating children of each community where Asase Yaa bases itself.
