METHODOLOGY AND THEORETICAL APPROACH Emotions, thoughts, memories, behavioral nuance and mind-body connections are undeniably real and constantly experienced by everyone, but very hard to describe, isolate or quantify. Each therapist develops a unique and evolving approach based on graduate training, post-graduate training, experience working with clients directly, and the personal and interpersonal capacities of the therapist herself/himself.   My theoretical training has focused on, but is not limited to, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Systems Theory (including Internal Family Systems), Attachment Theory, Cognitive Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Humanism and Constructivism. Each of these perspectives informs my increasingly intuitive approach to joining my clients where they are, understanding why they have come for therapy, and working collaboratively with them to find the relief, change, understanding or growth they seek.   I am not a passive or quiet therapist; my style tends to be engaged, non-judgmental, curious, challenging when necessary, and deeply compassionate.  I am able to listen actively and carefully, and to honor my clients' pace, boundaries and sense of readiness.  My methodology in approaching the work tend to be natural and contextual; I do not employ many structured techniques or branded methodologies. Areas of special focus include:  Self-Love and Acceptance; Depression / Anxiety (Situational, Complicated, Chronic), Relationships (Preparedness, Dating, Commitment, Blended Families), IBS Symptoms, Chronic Pain, Weight Loss, Smoking Cessation HYPNOSIS I have 100+ hours of post-graduate training in clinical hypnosis, which enables me to work with my clients on both a conscious and subconscious level, depending on the clients' goals and preferences.  The majority of my hypnosis training has been at the Milton Erickson Foundation in Phoenix, AZ, which teaches an indirect, utilization-based approach that avoids commands or overt suggestion. Helping my clients hear and see their own internal, subconscious wisdom is always my objective.  The words and images presented by your own subconscious mind will mean more to you and stay with you longer than anything you hear from a therapist or read in a book.  Furthermore, working with trance to explore and connect with repressed or denied "parts" of ourselves can be profoundly healing; hypnosis and IFS (Internal Family Systems) are highly compatible. I do not use hypnosis with all of my psychotherapy clients; I may suggest it for some clients / goals, but it is never required.  ABOUT BARBARA Practicing Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy in central Austin, I meet with clients in a serene home office, conveniently located near 9th and MoPac; this location is quiet and private, and it's very easy to park. I come to the practice of psychotherapy in middle-age, bringing significant life experience to the skills, education and compassion that make therapy meaningful. I also come with more than ten years of my own work as a therapy client, and a strong, first-hand understanding that finding truth and meaning in our painful histories - and our present struggles - is liberating.    I have a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from St. Edward's University (2010), and a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts (classics and linguistics) from George Washington University (1990).
