Unless you're under the age of 2, you don't have to think much about walking. You just do it.

Not so in Steppy Pants, the "walking simulator" that has captured the imagination of a big chunk of the mobile gaming audience. With its blocky graphics and simple, one-touch gameplay, it quickly calls to mind titles like Crossy Road, but it also throws ragdoll physics into the mix to create a winning formula all its own.

And if you're of the opinion that "simple but challenging" is such a common phrase that it's become cliche, you haven't played much Steppy Pants yet. While it's not complicated, it's also not easy to keep avoiding those cracks, so we've come up with some tips and tricks to help you keep stepping and get a higher score.

Don't forget that you alternate legs

Remember the sage words of Chris Griffin from Family Guy (as inspired by Randy Newman). Every time you tap on the screen, you are stepping with the opposite leg from the previous tap.

That's important, because in the heat of gameplay, it's easy to forget. What you'll find is that it's essential to get into a nice rhythm, moving one leg and then another. When the cracks are coming at regular intervals, it's easy to simply time your presses to be about the same length for nice, even steps.

Of course they won't always come like that, so ...

Sometimes smaller is better

As tempting as it is to simply take each sidewalk segment in one step, sometimes that isn't the best way to go. As you progress, you'll find very large chunks of sidewalk that are too big to take in one step (remember, your character will fall if you have him take too large a step), and bigger gaps that are more treacherous to navigate -- like at road crossings, for instance.

In those instances, it makes sense to take smaller steps and bring one leg even with the opposite one before moving forward again. Essentially, you're trading speed for control, moving forward with every odd-numbered step and balancing on the even ones.

Combos: Not just a tasty snack

Here's where you can quickly increase your score in Steppy Pants much faster than you might expect. Typically, every new segment of sidewalk only scores you one point.

However combos are also possible, provided you can traverse three segments in three steps anddo so in a fairly quick amount of time. Take too long and the combo is off.

You can tell when a combo is possible by the colored outlines that will appear around the sidewalk segments after you've pulled off three straight steps, which will set off the chain. And pulling off consecutive combos gives you even more bonus points, so if you can pull off three combos in a row, it will be worth more points that three individual combos.

The key is to be realistic. Again, there will be times when combos simply aren't feasible, and your main concern should just be staying upright and moving forward. Mastering judgment is as important as working the controls in order to get a higher score in Steppy Pants.
