Feeling a bit nostalgic for Star Trek? Well,Star Trek Timelines is a new free to play game that will welcome you aboard whether you are a hardcore Trekkie or just a wannabe space explorer.

However, before you set off to discover the universe alongside Kirk and Co., here are a few tips that should hopefully ensure a smooth journey.

Fire away at will!

One of the things you will find yourself engaged in are the 1v1 starship battles. While these may look spectacularly nerve-racking, they are, in fact, quite simple. Although acquiring better ships is a gargantuan task, it’s not necessary in order to progress through the game.

Choose your crew according to your opponent’s strengths, for example, boosting your accuracy to counter ships with high evasion. Then it’s just a case of using your crew’s active abilities as soon as they're available.

The right crew for the job

The meat of the game consists of “away missions” - a branching tree of scenarios where you will need to pick one of three crew members to overcome certain skill point requirements at each stage.

Preparation is key. Before you begin, check the chart at the top of the mission screen and select characters that specialise in the corresponding skills. Essentially, you want to map a path suitable to your crew.

However, keep in mind that after selecting a character for a stage, the same character will have their skills temporarily reduced for the next stage. Additionally, matching “traits” your characters may have to those listed, will give a hefty skill boost at certain stages.

The last stage determines if you succeed or fail overall, so, ideally, you should save your best characters for the end.

Hit a wall? What next?

If you ever get stuck on a story mission, you should probably replay missions to obtain gear and level up your characters.

There are also faction missions available. However, these should be last on your daily checklist, as dispatched characters can’t be used elsewhere until they return.

You are also greatly rewarded over time through daily rewards and objectives, so if you’re still having trouble, take a break from adventuring for the day. Premium currency doesn’t need to be the solution to everything.
