Ghost Toasters - Regular Show Review

Halloween has come early on the App Store. Cartoon Network have joined the legions of developers and publishers who have been releasing halloween-themed games this season, and their new iOS platformer shooter Ghost Toasters - Regular Show, based on the hit cartoon, is anything but regular.

In Ghost Toasters - Regular Show, players take control of one of an expansive cast of characters from the show; be it Mordecai, Rigby, Pops, Margaret, or one of the rest of the gang as they gear themselves up with some badass weaponry and shoot hordes of ghosts into ectoplasmic fragments. Or rather, an explosion of coins. Coins can be traded to purchase upgrades and power-ups, which believe me, is something that will be hugely appreciated. Power-ups can vary from anything such as killing off all the enemies in the area or running over fellow ghosties with a golf cart. Upgrades are useful for building up character strength, damage, and critical hit percentages.

One other aspect of the game involves collecting “portals” that have different properties. Green portals will switch from one character to another unlocked character and purple portals will add a character to the stage to join in the mayhem. Though coins allow players to unlock characters should they want to, they will automatically unlock as the game advances.

The stages throughout the game start off quite simple and get increasingly more difficult as they go along. Unfortunately, without an easy mode players can expect to die repetitively as the levels seem to get equally more frustrating the further they advance. Though the art style is nicely polished, and the sound effects and music a great accompaniment, the same cannot be said for the user interface which is sometimes messy, and at times extremely exasperating. The game controls are positioned at the bottom of the screen, which is fairly straightforward but it took some time to get the hang of being able to run, jump, and shoot at the same time. Navigating throughout the menu is clear-cut and simple, however, and the inclusion of in-app purchases is available for players to enhance gameplay should they wish to, but it's not necessary.

With 40 levels of phantom-blasting fun, Ghosts Toasters - Regular Show is an enjoyable platform shooter offering hours upon hours of ghost-busting gameplay that will be a delight for fans of the show and newcomers alike.
