App Description
Phillip has been capturing images for more than 40 years. While he has been encouraged and guided by several artist friends, he is essentially self-taught. His capturing began during his Peace Corps experience in West Africa in the mid-1960’s and blossomed thanks to an artist friend and the support and opportunities offered through the fertile soils of the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Association, one of the premier grassroots artist collectives of the 1970’s. In 2003, Phillip decided to re-focus his attention from the social research and program evaluation that had occupied him for nearly 30 years, to provide more time and
attention to his photography. While some of Phillip’s images may qualify as traditional landscapes or portraits, most are either rooted in
the traditions of street photography as practiced by Atget, Hine, Evans, Eugene Smith, Henri
Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand or in the boisterous creativity of the revolutionary painters of the early 20th century – impressionism, cubism, surrealism and Dadaism – as they responded to the explosive urban-industrialism. However, he seeks to take both the street experience and the urban-impressionism ”into the rabbit hole,” as it were, by using the camera as an instrument to see “beyond the immediate.” Thus, it is the “Reflection” images that Phillip considers his “signature” works.
