The Praxis I test is used for testing persons entering a college or university to become a teacher. Praxis I (also known as the Pre-Professional Skills Test, PPST) is also required in some states when applying for a teaching certificate or license.
Praxis I is considered a basic skills assessment comparable to the SAT, GRE, or ACT. It is one of the tests administered by the Education Testing Service. It covers reading, writing, and mathematics. (By comparison, the Praxis II assesses many other subject areas, and the Praxis III assesses a new teacher in a classroom setting.
