Tower defense fans rejoice! Origin8, makers of the rather popular and critically acclaimed Sentinel 3: Homeworld have seen fit to drop the price for a limited time. Okay, it wasn't entirely their doing but rather Openfeint's FireSale promotion. Although technically it was the thousand Openfeint gamers who voted for the price drop, I suppose.

Regardless, Sentinel 3: Homeworld is temporarily marked down to a dollar. That's right, for an indeterminate about of time it's possible to get a hold of one of the App Store's most celebrated tower defense titles for next to nothing. Even better, as special "Thank You" for all the love, Origin8 has also temporarily dropped the price of the Campaign 2 DLC. So that's another dollar. Just in case anyone was wondering, that's $5 worth of some of the most highly regarded TD goodness for a mere $2.

I'm sure there are a fair number of people reading this who already own the game, but I also imagine a fair number of them have yet to get the DLC. No time like the present, right? And everyone else who loves tower defense games but still doesn't own it, wave those lame excuses bye-bye.

Posted by Brad Hilderbrand on December 8th, 2010

If you happen to be curious which recently released iPhone apps and games earned top marks from critics then look no further than this month's breakdown of top rated games from Quality Index. Taking aggregate review scores from well-known outlets such as TiPb, Slide to Play and 148Apps (that's us, yo), QI has ranked the top ten apps and games in two handy-dandy charts. Here's the breakdown of the titles and their overall scores.

Top Ten Games

1. Sentinel 3: Homeworld -9.4

7. Bam Bam Dash - 8.8

3. Disneyland Paris - 9.6
4. Tapatalk Forum App - 9.5
5. Calvetica Calendar - 9.5
6. Instagram - 9.4
7. ColorBlast! - 9.4
8. John Henry - 9.2
9. Stats for Halo Reach - 9.1
10. Audiogalaxy Mobile - 9.1

Given your own knowledge of the market and particular tastes how closely do your top ten lists from the past month match up with that of the professionals? Do we get to keep our jobs for another month or is it time to throw the bums out and let some folks who actually know what they're talking about?

Looking down the list I don't see any apps which I personally downloaded this past month, but looking at the scores now I'm definitely interested in Sentinel 3 and Stick Golf. I'm also not surprised to see LEGO Harry Potter did so well considering the fact that the LEGO game franchise is generally well-received by critics on top of being utterly adorable.

We'll be back with another batch of numbers when the December results go live, but in the meantime feel free to argue and debate these scores and generally carry on loud and angry conversations. This is the Internet after all; that's what it was made for. Well, one of the main things, anyway.

Just in time for Black Friday, Origins 8, known for their wildly successful Sentinel series, is launching Sentinel 3, the third iteration of the tower defense franchise. For those who haven't put their grubby little fingers on the first two, the Sentinel games offer an extremely rich tower defense experience without sacrificing textures that make traditional tower defense games seem bland. Instead of blob-like units and terrains, Sentinel has realistic enemies, great weapon effects, and plenty of battlefields worthy of an action title. According to Origin 8, Sentinel 3 is going to blow the other two out of the water, offering new weaponry, new abilities, and plenty of new units to keep fans of the series happy for a long while.

"This is our biggest game to date," said Lead Programmer and Designer Paul Jackman, "And an ambitious step forward for the Sentinel series. Our new mechanics give players even more strategic and tactical choices, plus the ability to customize their resources to support their play style."

"Sentinel fans are constantly asking for more," he continued, "So we've streamlined the content creation system to enable us to deliver. If you compare the number of maps and missions in Sentinel 3 at launch to the first two games, you can see that it's already paid off in a big way."

The new game features 20 levels across 14 maps, over 20 unlockable turrets, orbital ship weapons, automated drones, high resolution retina display graphics, endless and classic modes, and support for OpenFeint and Game Center. If you are a fan of the tower defense genre, it's imperitive that you don't miss out on what will surely be one of the best games of the year.

Fans of the tower defense genre will be happy to hear that Sentinel 3: Homeworld is near completion and will be released before the end of Autumn. The new app will include:
