Most of us have heard of musicians such as Avicii and Calvin Harris by now, and at one stage or another we’ve probably been tempted to try our own hand at DJing, well – now’s our chance thanks to algoriddim’s newest release, djay 2!
Creating a mash-up of two songs using the equipment that professionals use is no easy feat, but djay 2 makes it feel like child’s play. When users first open the app, they just have to simply add a song to each of the two discs, and then are free to add effects and mix the songs up to their hearts content.
For an app that is so feature rich and that has such endless possibilities with regards to what the user can create, the app is incredibly easy to use. It is clear that great care has been taken to ensure that the layout of the many settings and fine-tuning features would appeal to people new to DJing and long-time enthusiasts. There is also a great selection of effects to use; from looping the beat to ‘crushing’ the sound of the song.
Although not a fault of the developers, the fact that iOS has a locked file system means that none of the user’s Spotify or Rdio tracks will work within the app – which is a shame for those who have all of their music stored in the cloud.
One of my favorite features of djay 2 is what happens when I tap the icon in the middle of the screen. The two disc sets pull apart to reveal a customizable panel full of samples. These samples range from a gunshot to a siren and are incredibly fun to use if users wanted to add extra “oomph” to their remixes. I’ve also fallen in love with waveform view, because apart from being mesmerizingly beautiful, it also allows users to pinpoint positions in a song with ease.
Overall djay 2 is without a doubt the best app for those hoping to create simple mash-ups and remixes of their favorite songs thanks to the well designed interface and simple controls.
