Remedy Entertainment, best known for the Max Payne series of videogames and Alan Wake, recently unleashed Death Rally to the app store. Death Rally is a top-down, combat racing game, and is actually a remake of the company's first title from 1996. It features a single-player career mode where you can earn money to upgrade vehicles and their accompanying weapons. The core goal is to win races by any means necessary, including wrecking your opponents. There are a few cameo appearances along the way by John Gore of Minigore fame, Barry Wheeler from Alan Wake, and videogame legend Duke Nukem himself, all as boss racers.

From the onset, Remedy released Death Rally as a universal app, and has promised regular, free updates. It has since quickly climbed the app store charts, and the first update has just arrived short of two weeks. Along with bug fixes and other technical enhancements, version 1.1 includes:

New car:
-Unlock the power of the Wraith, a fast and furious NEW SPORTSCAR!

New weapons:
-STRIKER: Dish out massive damage with a weapon that fires multiple rockets!
-LASER SIGHT: Aim and destroy the enemy with more accuracy than ever!

New challenge:
-ALL NITRO CHALLENGE: Do you feel the need for speed?

Remedy has hinted at more updates to come very soon. Besides new tracks and cars, the addition of multiplayer has been promised (both local and online), as well as an appearance by a certain Mighty Eagle. The game originally shipped with 5 vehicle and 5 weapon types, all of which can be upgraded, as well as 5 core track types that are rotated and re-used throughout.

For anyone interested in the original PC game, Remedy has issued a free, re-release of it that has been tailored to run on modern hardware. You can download it from the Remedy Entertainment website.

HYBRID: Eternal Whisper Trailer Released

Posted by Bonnie Eisenman on July 16th, 2009

Gamevil has just released a new teaser for their upcoming game HYBRID: Eternal Whisper, which is set to release in the US App Store this Fall. The product of the same team behind the amazing RPG Zenonia, HYBRID has a lot of promise. Gamevil's calling HYBRID a "a new breed of stylish action adventure," and it looks like it'll focused more on combat and special moves than on a storyline. There will be 150 levels, a complex storyline, and plenty of challenge. If Zenonia's success and level of polish is anything to go by, HYBIRD should delight the hardcore gaming crowd.

Gamevil doesn't have a huge App Store presence on this side of the ocean yet (their only games with English localizations are Zenonia and Baseball Superstars) but from what I understand, they've got a solid presence in Korea. Like their other two US releases, HYBRID will be a port from a popular Korean title.

E3 Wrap-up: F.A.S.T., a Combat Flight Simulator from SGN

Posted by Jeff Scott on June 17th, 2009

F.A.S.T. from SGN is a very different game that this developers usual offerings. They are best known for the MMOs such as Agency Wars (App Info) and Mafia: Respect and Retaliation (App Info) as well as their Wii-like sports games like SGN Golf (App Info) and iBowl (App Info).

F.A.S.T. stands for Fleet Air Superiority Training and is a really killer arcade flight simulator. The game supports both single player and up to 4 players in dogfight mode over wifi.

There are multiple unlockable planes all the way up to the B2 Stealth bomber. As you progress in the missions, and beat them in under the required time, you will unlock planes which will give you more power for successive levels.

Once the app is updated to take advantage of in-app purchasing in OS 3.0, expect many more purchasable missions and equipment.

The game looks impressive, is very responsive, but the controls take a little getting used to. Take a look at the trailer below for a better idea of the furious gameplay.

Priced at the higher end for a game, $9.99, F.A.S.T. is available now. A lite version with only one plane is planned.

FaceFighter reminds me of early versions of Mortal Kombat. I had a lot of fun with that game, especially when friends and beer were involved. I never got great at it because of all the buttons, combos, and fatality moves were hard for me to remember (was
