Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander guide - tips and tricks for beginners
Halcyon 6 is a well-loved indie RPG with stellar tactical combat and some pretty good writing, too. It's now landed on the App Store, so mobile fans, if you're itching for a good intergalactic adventure, here's your game.
Being a strategy RPG, the game can be a bit challenging for beginners, especially considering Halcyon 6's depth. We've gathered a few tips and tricks to get your journey started with ease.
Invest in Tech Research
You can very well get away with ignoring research early on, but should you neglect it for too long, you'll find yourself struggling in battles. Tech Reserach is vital for upgrading your ships and weapons. Putting some effort into research allows you to build better hangars, better ships, and even help improve your cadets to ensure your starbase is always in fighting shape. If you find that you don't have enough resource for upgrades, head out into space and comb the galaxy for them.
Learn your enemies' weaknesses
To make battles a lot easier, it's worth studying up on your characters' skills so you can take advantage of your opponents weaknesses. It's worth noting that enemy weakness works a little differently in Halcyon 6, as you're fighting ships. You'll need to use your engineers to "cast" weaknesses on your opponents to damage their hulls and chip away at their defense, making it easier for you to do serious damage. Learning how your team's different support and offensive abilities work together to exploit potential enemy vulnerabilities.
Balance is important
Like most RPGs, it's important that your party has a good balance in roles. Be sure to fill your party with characters that can provide healing, support buffs, and general offense to ensure that you have all of your bases covered. In Halcyon 6, there are a few different classes that fill these roles. Science officers are capable of healing your officers, tech officers are your damage dealers, and engineering officers provide a good mix of both support and offense -- they're like the red mages of space!
