If you travel south from Lake Garda, you are faced with a spectacle of rare beauty, a more or less continuous range of low-lying hills interrupted by hollows filled with little lakes.
In this verdant scenario of gently-rolling hills carpeted in vineyards and blue patches of peatlands lies Solferino. On arrival here, you find yourself immersed in nature and history. Those who seek places of cultural interest even when on holiday can visit the fortifications erected by the Gonzagas and the places and relics of the battle that made Solferino world-famous and launched the process of Italian unity and independence. This episode gave Genevan Jean Henri Dunant the idea of setting up what was to become the International Red Cross association.
Drawn by history to visit Solferino, you cannot fail to be fascinated by the delightful green countryside that has erased all traces of the war, entrusting the memory of these heroic deeds to the headstones and memorials scattered throughout the area.
