When St. Petersburg was founded in the late eighteenth century, it was intended as a resort town for the rich and famous. A Mediterranean Revival style of architecture emerged to decorate the shoreline of the young city. Today, much of that old resort town charm still exists. The architecture of the town, including many of the historic buildings, speaks to this elite crowd. Four of the sixteen stops are buildings that have been named to the United States National Register of Historic Places. Nevertheless, a modern St. Petersburg is emerging with restaurants, bars, entertainment, outdoor activities, arts, and new forms of architecture to take on the old resorts and Mediterranean Revival style. This tour will focus on the art and architecture in the downtown area.
*Note: Continued use of GPS in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
