App Description

The periodic table of the elements provides the most important organizing principle in all of chemistry. At the molecular level, how similar or how different are the alkali metals? What about the halogens or the first row of the transition metals? Examining and comparing molecular models helps with recognizing patterns and retaining information. ODYSSEY Chemical Elements is a support tool that provides a comprehensive set of models.

The app includes accurate models for the standard state of almost all elements in the periodic table. Multiple allotropes are available for all common textbook cases. Using simple gestures, the models can be inspected at any orientation and zoom level and examined using different visualization styles. Where applicable, different isotopes can be detected for the different atoms of a given sample. Many models can also be animated in room temperature simulations, highlighting the distinct differences between solids, liquids, and gases. A glossary, comments section, and set of multiple choice questions (with randomized options) complete the app.

Learning about atoms, isotopes, and structural similarities between the elements is an important part of the introductory chemistry curriculum. ODYSSEY Chemical Elements aids this learning with hands-on visual evidence.
