The “Football 2014 - First Round Calculator” is based on a sophisticated, established mathematical model which has been introduced in 1990 and continuously fine-tuned since then.

The team strengths are automatically updated after each match of the tournament.

Besides the current score, the following parameters are taken into account:
* Average number of goals per match
* Home field advantage of Brazil
* Home field advantage of the other South American teams
* Tendency to defend a draw
* Frequency of stronger teams underestimating underdogs

The app gives the user the option to adjust these parameters. Their default values have been determined by sophisticated statistical analyses. They are expected to be well suited to the upcoming tournament.
