App Description
Rhodes is at the meeting point of three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa. This geographical position has been a contributory factor in the development of flourishing commerce from prehistoric times onwards and in ensuring for the island long periods of prosperity in its three thousand-year history. Its ships were the means by which the cultural achievements of the surrounding peoples were introduced into Rhodes and its own were generously exported. The position of Rhodes on the strategic route between East and West has, however, also been the cause of successive invasions and prolonged oppression. Rhodes is the largest of a complex of islands in the south eastern Aegean, ranging from the large to the tiny and numbering over 200, known as the Dodecanese.
