Asteroid Smash Review

Asteroid Smash is a game that’s best played with friends. It’s designed for 2 to 4 players, and the goal is to build attack ships to take out friends that are trying to mine asteroids that belong to other players. Gamers must defend their moon base with their cannon and remain the last one standing in order to win.

The pictures and videos of Asteroid Smash make the game appear confusing at first, but there is an in-game tutorial that helps players get started. From the main screen, players press on asteroids to join. Each player has a moon base that is located on one of the four corners of the iPad. When the game gets started, touch around the moon to move the ship. Players can then fire at their enemies and asteroids by tapping the gun. The main objective is to mine the asteroids in the middle to earn cash, buy attack ships and weapons, and destroy all the other players.

Players are able to earn money in the game by purchasing attack miners. This money can be used to buy things like rockets, rapid fire, lasers, health, and invaders. Invaders are dragged out into space and will continue to float around an enemy's base until they are shot down completely. Other weapons can be changed simply by touching the ammo counter.

There are mini games thrown into the mix that help keep Asteroid Smash interesting. These games can change the balance of power and even require gamers to work together in some instances.

The 8-bit graphics and retro design work well for this game. It brought back nostalgic memories of sitting around the television and playing Sega or Atari with friends and family. It’s great to see a game that focuses on playing with loved ones.

On the other hand, having a solo mode wouldn’t be a bad idea. Adding an AI to play against and Game Center integration would help to extend the Gameplay. Furthermore, more weapons, upgrades and the addition of online multiplayer would add to the excitement. My only complaint about the game itself is the placement of the pause button. I’ve accidentally hit it a few times, but I’m not sure if there is a better place to put it.

All in all, Asteroid Smash is a great way to spend time with friends. Use it to settle arguments, decide on a place to eat, or to see who really is the best asteroid miner. It’s a little pricey with a $2.99 price tag, but the price is well worth it for those who are tired of playing iPad games by themselves.
