Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies Comes Flying into the App Store This Fall

Posted by Andrew Stevens on October 21st, 2013

It's almost time to take our planes back up into the skies, flying over the pacific, as 2K and Firaxis Games have announced Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies. This is a sequel to the popular and mightily fun strategy title, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, which we (I) gave Editor's Choice back in May.

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies takes players to the Pacific Ocean during World War II where they'll be able to battle at Pearl Harbor, Midway, and Guadalcanal. Once again, players are also able to unlock special skills, upgrades, and maneuvers that will be very useful during battle.

I definitely can't wait to take on these new missions with those beautiful World War II Warbirds! Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies will be available on iOS this fall.

2K Drive Refuels With New Cars, Events, and Enhancements to the Gameplay

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

2K Drive comes speeding in with a new update that features a European car pack that includes a Jaguar F-TYPE, Vauxhall Astra VXR, and the Range Rover Evoque Si4 and SD4. While typing that I've wanted to say Jaguar R-TYPE and SD6 (Hi, Alias fans).

The update also brings a series of new events to the game and a restart button for those of you who can't drive. Thankfully they also worked on vehicle control improvements, including steering sensativity for a more precise handling of the vehicles. So maybe you won't need to restart quite as much. Ok, fine, maybe *I* won't have to restart quite as much!

Drive on over to the App Store and check it out!

Taking A Few Laps With Lucid's Peter O'Brien To Discuss 2K Drive

Posted by Andrew Stevens on September 6th, 2013
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

2K Drive made its appearance on the App Store yesterday at the price of $6.99. I'm always excited when a new racing game releases, especially when it's from a company that was founded by people who worked on titles like Project Gotham Racing and Blur. So, being excited about 2K Drive and having some hands-on experience from my time at PAX, I had some questions for the guys at Lucid Games.

I would like to thank Lucid’s Peter O’Brien for taking the time to answer my questions. Alright, lets get into the good stuff!

148Apps: Why did you decide to make 2K Drive? What was the “driving” point?
Peter O'Brien (PO): A lot of the devs at Lucid either love driving games and/or cars in one way or another. Some restore them, some race RC’s, others collect coffee table books. But in essence, we love the culture of cars and wanted to bring that to a wider audience by expanding the experiences in an authentic driving game.

148Apps: There must be a lot of love for cars and racing in general within your company. 2K Drive features real-life news from racing websites, which includes videos and photo galleries. What made you decide to add this feature?
PO: Yes, there is. Some of that love came out of making driving games for years; others can spot the make and year of a car from a shut line or an engine blip. We wanted to bring the news to a wider audience, a new generation, but we also believed it would expand the idea of the app as being more than a game, giving people a reason to stay in it or come back to.

148Apps: How much studying did you do on other mobile racers during the creation of 2K Drive? There are a lot of favorites out there, including arcade racing games and “real racing” games.
PO: We never stop studying the competition, and I trust they do the same. But more importantly, we knew what we wanted to do very early on and we believed in the experience we could create. The most exciting thing for us, however, is that all of this is first generation tech. Others are on their third/fourth and we don’t see ourselves playing too much of a catch-up.

148Apps: How well do you think 2K Drive will compete against other racers and why?
PO: We hope it will do well because it offers a different package than its competition, and the handling is authentic. It’s something we think competitors have been scared of doing because of the device, but we just saw as a challenge. Our content is diverse, whether players are off-roading, track racing, stunt driving, or drag racing – no one offers what we do in one package.

148Apps: As I mentioned, 2K Drive features the live news feed along with a number of modes and options for customization. These are important things to have, yes, but it all comes down to the gameplay. What will players like most about racing in 2K Drive?
PO: The handling model is so deep that players can spend a lot of time experiencing those features with all of our cars and tracks. We’ve made sure to include what we call ‘burst’ modes, like Car Football or Car Bowling, Hot-laps, race & drifting challenges, a stream of unlocks, and solid customization options for the car and driver.

We also built in a unique multiplayer feature called RaceFace (TM). This allows players skin a photo of their own face onto that of the drivers, so that when they are competing against rivals in the seamless multiplayer system, they will be able to see real friends and players behind the wheel of the cars. It’s like your racing “selfie.”

148Apps: What do you feel will keep players coming back to 2K Drive? What’s going to be the obsession?
PO: That’s for the players to decide, but the depth of the handling and wide scope of driving experiences, mixed with the rival system and our daily challenges, offer some compelling reasons to build a 2K Drive habit!

148Apps: 2K Drive features more than 100 events, 25 tracks, and 25 cars for players to experience at launch. I’m curious though, how many cars do you have in your version of the game? Give me a hint about future updates!
PO: Ha, that would be telling. We have a few things coming very soon and are looking forward to seeing the feedback so we can refine the experience and deal with any problems. So please, do tell us what you do or don’t like in the game!

148Apps: What’s your favorite dashboard item to add to your vehicles in the game?
PO: Believe it or not, the traffic lights. It’s a retro thing!

148Apps: What’s your favorite mode in the game?
PO: I’ve got two: Survivor and any racing mode. Survivor is great because you set the target, and you get in the zone when you’re racing any type of event, because, well, it’s racing!

148Apps: Do you try to race a clean race or would you rather get dirty and run an opponent off the road?
PO: Clean. But rubbing is racing too!

148Apps: Pick one thing that we didn’t discuss that you would like to share with your fans.
PO: We had a small and dedicated team who believed in the company from early on. They made sacrifices to be a part of the project and our future, and without them, there would be no 2K Drive - so thank you. Also, a big thank you to everyone who has bought the game already, the fans who are spreading the word, and the players reaching out to help improve it. We’ll see you on the road!

I would like to thank Peter O'Brien once again for taking the time to answer our questions. I wish you and your team the best of luck with 2K Drive and I look forward to seeing more from Lucid in the future! Thank you!

PAX 2013: Taking A Spin With 2K Drive

Posted by Andrew Stevens on September 3rd, 2013

I've been very excited about 2K Drive since the news broke that it was in development. So, I was even more anxious to try it out at the 2K booth while attending PAX Prime in Seattle. As expected, and because I always like a good racer, it was rather easy for me to have a good time with what was offered in the 2K Drive demo. I was first shown the sharp color-coordinated menus that separates challenges, mini-games, and real-life racing news from each other. After that I was able to jump in the driver's seat of a car and get my first taste of action.

Playing my first race was very easy to do since I was playing with speed, break, and turning assistance on high. I didn't realize it at first and thought it was a little too easy to handle, so I turned all that nonsense off as handling the vehicles with no assistance is always the way to go. Still, it gave me a chance to learn the London course and better prepare for it with the assistance turned off. I still hit the walls a few times with zero assistance, but the gameplay feels very smooth in motion and handles quite well once you get a good sense for the vehicle. Who knows how this will be with a much faster vehicle though, but I did find myself appreciative of the good handling with the thumb control for steering.

After a few concrete races I decided to take the demo and head to an off road course which was quite the bumpy ride, but a ride that is well worth taking. The off road course that was available was pretty simple with a couple of easy turns and a few decent jumps. Again, one of the beginning courses that help ease players into the game. I'll be hoping for more difficulty and rougher courses to race on when I unlock and purchase my F-150 Raptor. I can't wait to get dirt all over it!

I also demoed a couple of the mini-games, including a rollercoaster that forces players to drive a rollercoaster-like course without falling off the sides and a survival course that has players avoiding missile strikes from a helicopter. The rollercoaster was quite the challenge that will be both tempting and frustrating for the perfectionist. However, the demo of the survival mode was by far the least exciting thing that I played as it just wasn't fun to maneuver around the course while staying out of the helicopter's strike zone. Maybe it was an easy difficulty level thing...

Something that is always simple yet still fun is the customization options available in games for your vehicles. 2K Drive offers your typical customizations like color, hubcaps, and more, but also includes other unique features like dashboard items, window stickers, and things to hang from your rear-view mirror. They don't affect the gameplay or even matter much to most racers, but are still interesting enough for those that become big fans of the game and would like to show off their rides. Someone I met loved putting a hot dog on the dashboard.

2K Drive is shaping up to be a nice package for racing fans, based on what I experienced with the demo. There is still time left to see a number of changes or enhancements to sections of the game, but the most important factors are already present with good racing and challenges, a number of gameplay modes, and even reading material on the latest happenings in the real-life racing world.

I can't wait to spin my wheels throughout the entire game this fall!

2K Drive Gets A New Behind The Scenes Developer Diary, Takes A Closer Look At Game Modes

There is a brand-new behind the scenes video for the recently announced 2K Drive. This new developer diary gives you a closer look at Lucid's latest project as they discuss more about the car culture of the app, which features a newsfeed on automotive culture.

That's not all, as the trailer below also provides more video from the game itself as the developers go into more detail about some of the modes that are featured; such as an arena-based survival mode and skill mode. If you are as anxious about this game as I am, then you should definitely check out this first developer diary for 2K Drive.

Also, I can't wait to play some car drivin' football!

2K Drive To Spin Its Wheels On iOS Devices This Fall

Posted by Andrew Stevens on August 16th, 2013

2K and Lucid Games have announced that 2K Drive will be racing onto the App Store this fall as a premium title. To add a little background, Lucid Games is a studio founded by the creators of Blur and the popular Project Gotham Racing series, so it'll be great to see what they have on track for us drivers when they bring their new racing sim to iOS.

2K Drive features iconic locations from around the world with a large number of racing modes for players to speed through. With both single and multiplayer modes, players will partake in track racing, drag racing, street racing, off-road racing, and over 20 challenging mini-games. I'm so ready for all of that!

The game also features a mode called "RaceFace" which puts the player's face behind the wheel of more than 25 cars. Ok, that's not too interesting, but players will be able to see their friends' faces when playing against them in asynchronous multiplayer mode. I can't wait to see all my friends' faces in my rear-view mirror!

Car lovers will also be happy to hear that the game features a live newsfeed on the cover page of the app which provides automotive enthusiasts with videos and photo galleries. It also lets gamers like and share the latest news from many automotive news sources, such as Car & Driver, Road & Track, AutoBlog, and many more.

I think it's easy to say that I'm beyond excited for the release of 2K Drive. Don't disappoint me!

Grand Theft Auto Hijacks The App Store Next Week

Posted by Blake Grundman on December 6th, 2011

Ten years ago a little game by the name of Grand Theft Auto III took the world by storm and revolutionized the way that games were played.  Along with causing a boatload of controversy, the title went on to birth a whole new genre of open world games.  It only seems appropriate that a decade later Rockstar has decided that it was time to go back and give the game a proper anniversary re-release.

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition is set to land on the App Store next week, December 15th to be exact, for a mere $4.99.  This is a huge deal for fans of the series, as well as for a whole new generation of iOS gamers that will be introduced to the franchise.  It somewhat goes without saying, but it will be interesting to see if this is the kind of title that can stand the test of time.  We look forward to taking it out for a "test drive" very soon.
