Square Enix is remastering the first six Final Fantasy games on mobile
Square Enix is going to be releasing remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games for both Steam and mobile storefronts.
Each release is going to be part of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection, containing each game from Final Fantasy I all the way through to Final Fantasy VI. This part of the series is collectively known as the 2D era, released between 1987 and 1994, before the games switched to 3D with Final Fantasy VII.
These remasters were rumoured when last week the 3D remakes were renamed on stores to separate them from the classic versions (via Pocket Gamer). This collection is intended for long-term fans to revisit some classic Final Fantasy titles, but it also allows newer fans a chance to discover the series’ origins in a way that feels accessible to the modern gamer.

Apart from that, Square Enix hasn’t been able to share much in the way of details about it apart from this trailer. We know that the games will be released periodically over time, with the first one launching soon. We currently don’t have any info on potential release dates.
Developed by Square, Final Fantasy was first released in 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The series has changed over the years, going from 2D to 3D, and then later incorporating multiplayer and other kinds of modern design principles. It now stands as one of the most popular role-playing game series of all time.
Square Enix isn’t done with Final Fantasy-related mobile projects, however, as it will also be launching the battle royale title Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier later this year and the semi-remake Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis at some point in 2022.
