Endorsed by successfully-returned kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart, new app Hero is available now from the App Store. Once downloaded, you can invite your friends from Facebook, Google + and Twitter as a list of heroes. When you're in need - or just want to share the latest video from the pub with your friends - you launch the app and Hero will send video, audio and GPS coordinates to the social network of your choice, as well as other Hero app users within a 5 mile radius.

While we'd never endorse an app like this to be your primary means of safety, it could be a help if in need, and nearby Hero app users are available. The endorsement by Smart merely positions this app as a safety tool - she was not returned to her family due to any app, Hero or otherwise.

Still, having a list of folks who can watch out for you might be a good thing. If you had a bit too much to drink example, it might help you find a designated driver. If you get lost, it might help you find your way. And so on. As the app is free, it can't hurt to give it a looksee, right?
