The memorial in Elim and Pniel acknowledges the contribution and role played by the slave population at the Cape. Recognition of the contribution made by slave society has been recorded by a slave memorial on Church Square in Cape Town. Slave labour and their skills fashioned the distinctive Cape Heritage that attracts tourists to Cape Town. Statistically there were more slaves than burghers in the Cape Colony for most of the 18th century. The economy of the Cape Colony depended to a large extent on slave labour and evidence exists of slaves who built many buildings that still remain today.
More importantly, slaves played a vital role in the development of South African culture and the Afrikaans language. This publication therefore, attempts to highlight the contribution, trials and tribulations of slaves at the Cape.
The contribution made by the slaves were accompanied by much suffering and pain. It is hoped that this publication will bring about an awareness of the hardships slaves had to endure so that we as South Africans can reap the benefits of their hard labour.
