App Description

These 12 lessons provide initial instruction or intervention on the measureable attributes of objects; the units, systems, and processes of measurement; and how to apply that knowledge in appropriate settings. Emphasis is placed on estimation and solving everyday measurement problems.

The first five lessons focus on attributes of the measurement systems, same system conversions, and the tools needed to complete measurement tasks for time, distance, weight and mass.
M12.1 Measurement Systems
M12.2 Same System Conversions
M12.3 Measurement: Time
M12.4 Measurement: Distance
M12.5 Measurement: Weight and Mass

The next seven lessons deal with finding perimeter, circumference, area and volume of triangles, quadrilaterals, and irregular shapes, as well as pyramids, cylinders, and cones. The first three lessons pose problem situations and show the student how to develop formulas for finding area before applying them to find solutions. The areas of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, quadrilaterals, and irregular polygons are used in the lessons. The last four lessons show how to develop formulas for the surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional objects. Illustrations, diagrams, and 3-D models are used to help the student visualize prisms, pyramids, and cylinders. Activities are presented that have the student look for patterns and relationships and estimate the area and volumes before developing formulas for area and volume. The student uses measurement to explore the meaning of similarity among shapes and how similarity is applied to solve problems.
M13.1 Perimeter and Circumference
M13.2 Area
M13.3 Area: Irregular Shapes
M13.4 Surface Area: Prisms, Cylinders, and Spheres
M13.5 Volume: Prisms, Cylinders, and Spheres
M13.6 Surface Area: Pyramids and Cones
M13.7 Volume: Pyramids and Cones
