Aliens vs. Humans Version 2.0 in the Works, Bringing Base Building to the Angry Masses

Aliens vs. Humans was created as an homage to the X-Com franchise. That means 90's-style turn-based strategy action. However, this iOS game only had the combat element of the formula, which many players and our own Rob Rich enjoyed, but many people felt like something was missing. Well, developer Leisurerules has heard these complaints. They are now hard at work on version 2.0 of Aliens vs. Humans, which will add those other strategic elements to the game that people have loudly claimed was missing.

This means that players will be able to build and maintain bases all across the globe. The objective is ultimately to explore Earth to find the hidden alien teleporters, along the way researching teleportation. This will start off with being able to detect different degrees of teleporter activity, which will eventually lead to players being able to build their own teleporter to take the fight directly to the aliens, using recovered alien technology. Teleportation can also be researched as an ability to use in battle, to rapidly move units across the map. The game is still in development, with plans to come out before the early summer, to hopefully quell the anger of those who are so mad about not being able to build bases that they will give a game a lower score in an App Store review. Until that day, this trailer showing off a demo of base building is available.

Hunters 2 is Almost Here - Huzzah!

Posted by Rob Rich on February 29th, 2012

Okay folks, time to get ready. Start clearing off some space on that iOS device and set aside plenty of alone time because Hunters 2 is looming on the horizon. And not one of those "further away than it seems" horizons. I'm talking the kind of horizon that's really, really close.

The original game was something of a smashing success, but it wasn't exactly perfect. Many users took issue with the somewhat limited arsenal, the lack of much variation for the contracts, the repetitive environments, and so on. Well Rodeo Games has taken the criticism to heart. Hunters 2 will feature the same ridiculously awesome strategy gameplay, but also includes more. As in more of everything. More weapons, more environments, more gear, more environments, and even more features. Such as a full-blown campaign mode (*SQUEEE!!!*) It's also looking pretty spiffy with the new real-time lighting effects. And are those new enemy types I see in those screen shots? I think they are.

Regrettably there still aren't any real specifics about the launch, but Rodeo Games estimates that we can all look forward to seeing Hunters 2 on the App Store in just a couple of weeks. How much it'll cost is still up in the air, but honestly, does it really matter? I'm fairly certain there are a ton of iOS users that are anxious to jump on it as soon as it's available, no matter the price. Myself included.

Our rating: starstarstarstarblankstar :: FORWARD MARCH
I'm not entirely sure how to categorize Battle Frontier: The Adventures of Arthur. It's not quite an RPG, strategy or action game. I dunno, does the App Store have a tag for "Awesome?"

Turn Based Strategy Title Greed Corp Coming To iPad

Posted by Jennifer Allen on October 25th, 2011

PC and Console gamers may well recognise the name Greed Corp. A turn-based strategy game, it was quite a hit through Steam, Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade back in 2010. Now, iPad owners will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about.

Arriving later this month, Greed Corp is all about finding a balance between harvesting resources and preserving the land in order to stay alive. Finite resources make it harder to build an effective army in order to destroy the opposing force. Offering an innovative land collapsing mechanic, Greed Corp hopes to be a cut above the competition.

There will be a Campaign mode featuring over 24 unique maps across 4 chapters, with 2-4 player battles also available for the socially minded. Cross platform multiplayer matches between iOS, Android and Mac users will ensure that there are plenty of players to compete against.

Check out the teaser trailer below for a taste of what to expect when Greed Corp is released later this month.

Steambirds: Survival Coming to Mobile Platforms Thanks to Halfbrick

Posted by Carter Dotson on September 29th, 2011

Spry Fox Games are at work on a follow-up to their Flash, iOS and Android turn-based strategy game Steambirds. The original iOS version was developed in part by Semi Secret Software, makers of games like Canabalt. Now, they're working on a new iteration of the game, and have partnered up with another major indie developer on this new version of the game. Entitled Steambirds: Survival, this sequel to the original Steambirds is being co-developed by Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride developers Halfbrick.

This sequel to the original game features similar turn-based strategy gameplay. Players chart a course for their planes to fly, with the goal being to take out enemy ships, using powerups to help achieve this goal. All ships move and commit their actions at the same time. The game takes place in an alternate history steampunk-inspired universe, where players must try to lead UK planes against the Axis forces. While the gameplay appears at first to be similar to the original, at least in terms of core mechanics, this game focuses on endless survival levels instead of pure level completion. However, the mobile version is claimed to be a different game from the Flash version, with a mission-based structure, and a variety of new media and gameplay elements.

The game will be free to play as well. The Flash version, playable for free on Spry Fox's Steambirds website, uses an in-game currency for buying new planes; the mobile versions will likely use a similar setup. It would be likely that coins will be able to be purchased through the app to speed up the process of buying new planes. The game is set to release in early October for iOS devices, with no word yet on an Android release. Until then, check out some screens and a trailer for the game.

Star Hammer Tactics Takes its Turn on the iPad This October

Posted by Carter Dotson on September 21st, 2011

Black Lab Games' turn-based strategy game Star Hammer Tactics, originally released for the Xbox Live Indie Games and PSN Minis for PSP and PS3, is making its way to the iPad this October.

This game purports to be a fast-paced strategy game where players control a fleet of ships trying to survive the onslaught of the Nautilids trying to attack the planet Novus. The game claims to have a rule set that is simple but still deep, so players can et into the game easily, while still allowing master strategists to use their skills to the fullest. The iPad version is a rewrite of the original game, featuring redone graphics in HD, a redesigned interface for touchscreen control, and gameplay tweaks to make the game be improved and user-friendly. The game will feature a 15 mission campaign and a 2 player multiplayer mode that takes place on one iPad. all bolstered by Game Center leaderboards and achievements.

This redone version will be available on the App Store this October.

Hothead Gets Rough With Kard Combat

Posted by Rob Rich on July 13th, 2011
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Our rating: starstarstarstarhalfstar :: WORTH A LOOK :: Read Review »

Lots of genres are a bit over-saturated on the App Store, and card games are no exception. Combination card and fighting games, however, are few and far between. Aware of this deficiency, Hothead Games has seen fit to release Kard Combat this week. For the low low price of nothing.

Granted it's still more of a card game than a fighter; players choose from a handful of different mages with a few unique cards in their collection, matches involve planning and strategy as opposed to quick reflexes and so on. The fighting aspects have more to do with the brevity of each match and their one-on-one nature. It utilizes a slightly less complex version of the "line of cards" system some are no doubt familiar with, in which each user lines up their cards while any unopposed summons will do direct damage to the opposing player. Naturally, some cards have special effects that can create some interesting strategies.

Players can try out each of the four types of mages (Holy, Death, Machine and Dominator), as well as the Single Duel and multiplayer modes, for free. Full access to a single mage's campaign will require an in-app purchase of one dollar, while unlocking all four will cost three. And for any players interested in diving straight in to the multiplayer stuff, everything (all cards, etc...) can be unlocked for ten dollars. Bear in mind that the cards can eventually be unlocked through diligent play, and that the ten dollar purchase is only necessary for those who don't want to "waste time" with the singleplayer campaign.

Tilt to Live Developers One Man Left Finally Announce New Game

Posted by Carter Dotson on April 4th, 2011

One Man Left, developers of Tilt to Live, sure have been coasting on that little game for a while now. Sure, it was cool that they added 3 new free modes, as well as the in-app purchase Viva la Turret mode and Viva la Coop mode post-release, even to the iPad version, which not only lets you enjoy playing the game, but also feel very rich at the same time as you and another iPad owner play with each other. And of course, they're But as time wore on, the masses clamored for more. Have we all grown tired of seeing red? Are we ready to do something besides tilting? The time has come for something new, One Man Left!

And something new is indeed in the works, as One Man Left have revealed the beginnings of their newest project - so unknown that they have yet to reveal a title for it. The upcoming game is a turn-based strategy title, designed "for everyone." What this apparently means is no extraordinarily long unskippable dialogue, a simple control scheme and interface (because who really likes overly complex strategy games?), and the ability to play as something other than space marines and aliens. Instead, you'll get to play with such teams as plants, robots, and a cuddly team - although their cuddlyness can be debated, as they do apparently rip off robot heads, as you can see in the artwork.

As far as actual game details go, multiplayer is definitely in the works, with plans for both local and online multiplayer with matchmaking - I personally am hoping that this includes asynchronous multiplayer. The game is still very early on in development, as a prototype has just been completed for the game, but production on the game "is now in full swing" for release later this year, and we can expect plenty more in the way of details and updates on the game's progress as time goes on from the folks at One Man Left; keep an eye on their blog for more exciting and entertaining updates from the fellas.
