Zombie Commando is the gaming equivalent of french fries: tasty at the time, but ultimately you’ll be hungry for something more filling in an hour or so. Although, in the case of Zombie Commando, you’ll probably forget all about it rather than go back to the fast food later.
You control a team of zombie killers as you move them around various areas, taking out all the zombies in their wake. It’s an incredibly simple game to learn as (for the most part) all you do is direct their path. Firing weapons is done automatically and there doesn’t even seem to be a way of dividing up the troops for the sake of strategy. Something that does grate when up against staunch opposition.
Each level offers a different objective, such as lasting a certain length of time, escorting a VIP, or killing a set number of zombies. Because after all, killing zombies is very important here. It’s a fun but shallow experience with some minor depth added by the coins that can be acquired for completing objectives.
These coins can be used to upgrade your existing troops or to buy new and better soldiers. Every now and then a boss battle appears, which requires a little more thought but not much. Don’t expect the coins to be too generous, though. It’s going to take you a long while to unlock the best troops and you might find your attention waning before that happens.
The joy here comes from the mindless zombie slaughter rather than a sense of progression. Sometimes you simply don’t want to think and Zombie Commando is just that kind of game. Things get harder the further you progress, but it’s still a very simple game. You’ll find yourself hooked for a weekend then never think of it again. Sometimes though, that’s just what you want, much like some completely frivolous french fries.
