Who said that a Twitter app had to be dull and predictable? No one, admittedly, but we all kind of assume that Twitter apps will be fairly obvious in their approach. Interestingly, Head First Communications decided to combine a Twitter App with a side scrolling platformer, at least partially.
Yes, Super Twario is a wholly appropriate title. It's a Twitter app that creates a game world from your Twitter feed. You control Twario the rabbit as you run around recent updates from your Twitter feed. Jump in the air and hit the avatar of one of the people you're following and you can send them a message. Simple eh?
You can also gain high scores in the game through gaining followers, being retweeted or receiving a Follow Friday recommendation. The more you use it, the more points you gain, as it can only receive so much data from the Twitter API. There are also Game Center based achievements to gain, such as tweeting frequently through the app or following the @SuperTwario Twitter feed.
It's an intriguing idea to combine a Twitter App with a game but this is first and foremost a Twitter app. The game elements only really comprise running back and forth through the land by tilting the iOS device and tapping the screen to jump. There's not really anything to explore. In saying that, the potential is clearly there. The addition of the Day/Night cycle is particularly nice. Actual tweeting is easy to do, too, although if you follow lots of people, it is a little unwieldy to easily browse through all the tweets.
For a Twitter based curiosity, Super Twario is worth a look as it makes text based communication cute and fun. Fingers crossed for some more updates, though, such as the ability to stomp on enemies or different worlds to explore.
