Kung Fury: The Game is a fun, if mindless, one-button beat-em-up.

If you’ve never heard of Kung Fury (or True Survivor for that matter), you can check out the full movie for free on YouTube right now. The short explanation is that it’s a completely ridiculous and glorious homage to stupid 80s action movies. And it’s been given its own game on iOS in the form of Kung Fury: The Game.

This is an incredibly simple beat-em-up that puts you in the acid-washed jeans of the titular hero as he pummels endless amounts of nazis, kung fu masters, nazi kung fu masters, and nazi robot legs. All you have to do is tap the left or right side of the screen to make Kung Fury strike in that direction, and if he’s close enough to an enemy he’ll automatically attack. Of course if you miss you'll leave him open to getting hit himself. Yes, it’s basically One Finger Death Punch but with more lasers and a lot more nazis.

Some enemies require more than a single hit to defeat, and you’re going to need to familiarize yourself with the different types if you want to beat the kung fu legend’s high score. When it all comes together it’s very easy to get lost in the rhythmic tapping and nazi-slaughter.

The thing is, even though I do enjoy playing Kung Fury quite a bit it just ends up making me want an iOS port of One Finger Death Punch all the more. Kung Fury is basically an endless score-chasing version of the older game without any extra modes or any form of progression. That’s not to say it’s bad, but it’s very light on overall content.

I adore Kung Fury: The Game for it’s over-the-top-ness and the way it calls to mind my favorite one-button game ever, but it does leave me wanting a bit more. It’s still a totally worthwhile download, though.
