I suppose it’s not out of the question to think that game shows in the future may become so “extreme” as to involve scaling the side of a building. I could see that as a sort of Fear Factor/American Gladiators hybrid, actually. In that regard, Amazing Studly Strikes can almost be seen as prophetic. Although they probably wouldn’t really use quite so many gorillas.

Amazing Studly Strikes is pretty much the aforementioned fictitious game show I’ve already described. Players must get Studly to the top of the skyscraper in one piece. Of course it’s not as simple as just climbing straight up. Along the way they’ll need to fight off numerous enemies, as well as a few massive bosses, intent on drag the contestant back down. The climbing itself is automatic so all the player has to worry about is fending off the riff raff by tapping one of the four quadrants (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right) of the screen to knock them away. However they don’t simply line up to get pummeled; they’ll approach in huge masses all at once, requiring some pretty intense tapping to discourage.

There’s a simple sort of pleasure to be found in Amazing Studly Strikes’ arcade-style gameplay. It’s not complicated by any means but it’s fairly intense with so many huge enemy waves approaching almost constantly. It’s not entirely hopeless, though. With enough practice it’s actually possible to do quite well even without upgrading reach, power, and the like over at the Gym. Studly’s special screen-clearing ability that charges up when enough enemies have been knocked off is a big help, too.

This is the part where I’d usually mention unrealistic paywalls or gated content, but honestly Amazing Studly Strikes doesn’t have any of those problems. Progression is fast enough that there’s no real reason to spend any real money on cash and it only takes one attempt or two before having enough to buy another upgrade (of which there are many). Really the only problems I’ve had with it are a general lack of any real complexity and that it could use more enemies, bosses, or possibly buildings. All in all there really isn’t much to complain about here.

Amazing Studly Strikes may not be very deep or particularly rewarding, but it’s a reasonable amount of fun and won’t hamstring players for avoiding in-app purchases. It’s also a bit light on overall content (minus the link to the webcomic, of course), but there’s still plenty available to keep a bored iOS user entertained for a while.
