App Description

The Poisson's Ratio Calculator is a physics/math calculator designed to find Poisson's ratio, transverse strain, or longitudinal or axial strain quickly and easily.

Features:
- Instant calculation
- Results are copyable to other apps
- Formulas are included as reference
- Supports up to 16 decimal places
- Supports various units for each input

Poisson's ratio is the ratio of the relative contraction strain (transverse, lateral, or radial strain) normal to the applied load to the relative extension strain (or axial strain) in the direction of the applied load.

Poisson's Ratio can be expressed as:

μ = - ( εt / εl )

Where:
μ : Poisson's ratio
εt : Transverse strain (m/m, ft/ft)
εl : Longitudinal or axial strain (m/m, ft/ft)

Poisson’s ratio, named after Siméon Poisson, is the negative ratio of transverse to axial strain. When a material is compressed in one direction, it usually tends to expand in the other two directions perpendicular to the direction of compression. This phenomenon is called the Poisson effect. Poisson’s ratio (nu) is a measure of this effect. The Poisson ratio is the fraction (or percent) of expansion divided by the fraction (or percent) of compression, for small values of these changes.
