App Description

The Ouseburn’s source is Callerton Pond, near Ponteland, from there it meanders through Gosforth, passing through golf courses, farm fields and modern residential developments, gaining size all the time.

By the time it reaches Jesmond Dene the stream has become a minor river. After exiting Jesmond Dene, the Ouseburn goes underground briefly before emerging from a culvert just beneath the Ouseburn Viaduct. It is from this point that the Ouseburn Valley properly commences, a valley of just under one kilometre in length.

This App covers the Ouseburn Parks of Jesmond Dene, Paddy Freeman, Heaton Park, Armstrong Park, Jesmond Vale and the City Stadium Park as well as the Lower Ouseburn Valley. In these parks there are numerous, interesting, well written information panels or plaques, covering the main sights. Some of these panels are faded or difficult to read, most of the text appears within this App.

Public sponsored Art is prevalent along the banks of the river, information on these works and how to find them is also included. Public art is not always easy to understand or even notice.

The Ouseburn is quite a small stream, only about 10 miles from its source to where it flows into the River Tyne, in these ten miles there are 61 crossing points, ranging from stepping stones, to medieval bridges to giant viaducts. The Bridges of the Lower Ouseburn Valley provide a 'bridgescape' almost as dramatic and as interesting as the River Tyne.

These Bridges are not just tremendous civil engineering achievements, they are works of art, often providing the keys to understanding the rapid and dramatic early industrialisation and success of this area of North East England. Bridges provide distillations of the areas history and economy.

There are a wide variety of differing walks available around the Ouseburn, some are listed with directions.
