School guides are famously unsatisfactory. With information supplied by the school administration, and neat sound-bites given by media-savvy heads, it takes quite a bit of reading behind the lines to get a sense of what a school is really like: there should almost be a guide to the guide; for instance, if a school has “an uncompetitive liberal environment” you should read, “low achieving with discipline problems”. The Bright Young Things Guide aims to throw this tradition on its head: the crucial difference is that the main source of the guide is the students themselves. Rather than toeing the party line, we hear and tell what it is really like to go to these schools: what life in the classroom is like, and crucially what goes on outside of it.
