About Clowns

Clowns are comic performers who employ slapstick or similar types of humor, often in a pantomime style, usually with outlandish costumes featuring white or bright face paint, colorful wigs, exaggerated footwear, colorful over-sized clothing, and silly props or toys. Their entertainment style is generally designed to entertain large audiences in performance halls at a distance. Clowns appear in multiple cultural settings. The comedy that clowns perform is usually seen to be that of a foolish person, where everyday actions and events become extraordinary with ridiculous tasks, for a short while, becoming ordinary.

Since the late 18th century, clowns are most associated with the circus where they have performed a comedic role linking other acts in the circus performance together or performing in order to give acrobatic or animal acts a chance to set-up or change.

The origin of the word 'clown' is uncertain. The word “clown” first appeared in the 1560s and may come from a Scandinavian linguistic root meaning 'clumsy, boorish fellow' (Icelandic klunni and Swedish kluns). The meaning of clown as a fool or jester came about around 1600. The most ancient clowns have been found in the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt, around 2400 BC.
