The reason is quite simple: their talents were never used to fight their neighbours. Instead, they defended people against magical beasts that inhabited unpopulated borderlands.a
Unfortunately, these times have become just stories of the past. Knights were allowed not only to kill monsters but to tame them as well and this led to the tragedy when the death of a king caused a civil war.
