Distract Yourself With These Great Mobile Games on Sale Right Now

Posted by Campbell Bird on July 14th, 2020

There’s a lot going on right now, and I don’t really feel like trying to write some kind of pithy intro for it. All I’ll say is lots of people have been coming together and helping each other in small ways, and I’m choosing to focus on that as I try to stay safe myself.

One of the ways folks are trying to help are by making their games more affordable, or even free, during this time. Check out my top picks below of some great mobile titles that have gone on sale recently:

Games marked with an asterisk(*) denote that the entire developer/publisher’s catalog is discounted, despite the fact that all of their games may not be listed here.

Posted by Cameron Bald on July 13th, 2020

Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale is getting an iOS & Android beta test this Thursday, and you can sign up now to get involved.

This one's a follow-up to Slothwerks' deck-building roguelike, Meteorfall, from back in 2018. The idea is that you'll pick one of several character types, then venture through a series of procedurally generated dungeons while gradually acquiring new cards and devising fresh strategies.

Krumit's Tale will offer full multi-device support, meaning you can easily transfer your mobile progress over to the PC version. If you'd like to transfer your PC saves over to mobile, there's an in-game 'Export Data' option that allows you to do just that. On top of this, it also supports iCloud and Google Play Saved Games, which is ideal for those with multiple devices.

Posted by Campbell Bird on July 10th, 2020

In case you missed it, I am on a quest to rank every Apple Arcade game there is.

Patch Notes:

Patch notes have been removed and have been replaced with (NEW) designation for the games most recently added or updated on this list.

*UPDATE:* As the pace of Apple Arcade has slowed, old games will also be re-evaluated based on reader feedback and content updates. Recently re-evaluated titles will be designated with (UPDATE) next to the title name.

Game ranking updates for 7/10:

  • Neo Cab (#13)
  • Monomals (#14)
  • Legend of the Skyfish 2 (#34)
  • Creaks (NEW) (#37)
  • Jumper Jon (#84)
  • Fledgling Heroes (#86)

Games marked with an asterisk(*) are games that suffer in rank due to technical problems.

All current rankings are listed below. More titles will be added frequently until the list is complete.

Steam Link Spotlight - Disco Elysium

Posted by Campbell Bird on July 8th, 2020
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Steam Link Spotlight is a feature where we look at PC games that play exceptionally well using the Steam Link app. Our last entry was Signs of the Sojourner Read about how it plays using Steam Link over here.

For this entry, I dove into Disco Elysium, an open world role playing game where you play as a detective who has just woken up from an epic hangover, and is now tasked with attempting to solve a murder while trying to piece together his own whereabouts and life. What sets this game apart from other role playing games though is that it shies away from combat and instead relies on dialog-based interactions between characters, which works mostly because the game is very well written and full of detailed and lively characters.

Pokemon Go developers have announced the details concerning the upcoming Gastly Community Day. This particular event was selected by the players of the game after the Gas Pokemon came in second place after a poll that decided which Pokemon would be featured. The winner, which was Weedle, who had its Community Day in June.

So now it's Gastly's turn and the Community Day is set to take place on Sunday 19th July between 11 am and 5 pm local time. During those hours you can expect to see the original ghost Pokemon more frequently in the wild with a chance that you'll run into a Shiny variation.

Detective Di is a point-and-click murder mystery set in Tang Dynasty-era China

Posted by Cameron Bald on July 2nd, 2020

Detective Di is a point-and-click murder mystery set in Tang Dynasty-era China. You'll take on the role of China's best-known investigator, Di Renjie, as he solves a series of grisly murders that will ultimately lead him on a collision course with the country's rulers and Imperial Court.

While all of this is going on, there's talk of a potential uprising against the first female empress of China, Wu Zetian, and it appears to be the case that the murders are directly tied to some dark political secrets.

It's all very intriguing, and if the reviews of its PC version are any indication, the final product more than lives up to its neat premise.

SPHAZE is a neat-looking puzzler where you'll guide robots through increasingly elaborate mazes

Posted by Cameron Bald on July 2nd, 2020

SPHAZE is a neat-looking puzzler where you'll work to guide robots through increasingly elaborate mazes. It's set in a visually distinct world that's equal parts fantasy and sci-fi, and it's finally launched today for iOS and Android devices.

The team behind this one, DynamicTrio, is made up of Dying Light 2, Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 developers. SPHAZE is obviously completely different but perhaps equally intriguing.

It takes some inspiration from Cut the Rope for its arcade puzzles and Monument Valley for its striking visual design. Aiding the strong aesthetic is an original soundtrack that's best experienced with headphones.
