A new study commissioned by Logitech G suggests attitudes toward esports and professional gaming careers are continuing to shift globally, particularly among younger players raised in competitive online and mobile gaming ecosystems.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents said more formal education pathways should exist for those pursuing careers in esports and professional gaming, while more than half now see professional gaming as a legitimate career option.

Gen Z & Millennial support

Support was strongest among younger generations, with 67% of Gen Z and 60% of Millennials backing more structured esports education routes. Regional differences were also significant, particularly between Western and Asian markets where competitive gaming has become more culturally embedded.

Derek Perez, Global Communications Gaming lead at Logitech G, comments: “This research shows how far esports and gaming have come – not only as entertainment, but as a genuine path to personal and professional success. However, more can be done to support younger generations in pursuing careers in professional gaming.

“The more companies like Logitech support athletes and the industry overall, the more opportunities there will be for people around the world to pursue roles in esports.”

Career concerns

While mainstream acceptance of esports continues to grow, the survey found concerns around financial stability, industry competitiveness, and limited parental support still present major barriers for aspiring players and creators.

One in five respondents also said the lack of formal qualifications or recognised education pathways contributes to perceptions that professional gaming is not a “real” career.

At the same time, awareness of the demands involved in competitive gaming is increasing. Globally, 84% of respondents described professional gaming as mentally demanding, while more than half also viewed it as physically demanding.

Rising appreciation

The findings reflect the continued growth of esports across PC, console, and mobile titles, where structured competition, livestreaming, and creator-driven communities have increasingly blurred the line between hobby and profession.

Education was another major talking point among respondents. Nearly half said schools should offer esports classes alongside traditional sports, while 65% supported formal university, college, or specialist training pathways into the industry.

Respondents also said greater mainstream media coverage, better access to professional training facilities, and more transparency around earnings would help esports careers gain broader legitimacy.

As esports infrastructure continues to mature, access to professional-grade equipment is also becoming an increasingly important part of player development.

Derek Perez concludes: “Ensuring access to training, facilities, and technology is essential in ensuring the continued growth of careers in professional gaming.
