With the release of Gunship X upon us, there’s a good chance that a few people will have questions regarding the similarities between it and Limbic’s Zombie Gunship. If you’re unfamiliar with the particulars, the basic gist is that a couple of extra folks were brought on board to work on it, then everybody went their separate ways and now said extra folks are releasing a similar title about blasting aliens. Of course that’s just the Cliff’s Notes version. There’s actually a bit more to the story than that.

According to an official statement from Limbic Software’s Arash Keshmirian, the duo of Sander van Rossen and Serban Porumbescu were “brought on at Limbic to work on Zombie Gunship in 2010/2011,” Keshmirian said, “We decided to no longer work with them a couple years ago.” Porumbescu tells a similar story. “In 2011 three companies / individuals came together create Zombie Gunship. I for example came in as Hidden Elephant Inc, and was never an employee of Limbic Software.”

“Despite Zombie Gunship’s success,” Porumbescu continues, “the various parties involved decided to part ways with Limbic retaining the rights to Zombie Gunship. As co-creators of Zombie Gunship, Sander van Rossen and I, along with artist Bryan Bell, had many ideas around a new game that we felt were worth pursuing. Gunship X was born, and we created a new studio Well Formed Pixels to pursue its development.”

So there you have it. A bunch of people came together to create a game about blowing up zombies with a AC-130, parted ways, and a couple of them went on to create something akin to the next step.

Basically the only things it shares with the original are the name and that it's a tower defense game. And who doesn't love a tower defense game?

The game is out now and is a $4.99 Universal app. We'll have a review up as soon as we get a good chance to put the game through it's paces. For now this video will have to do.

Hands-On with Zombie Gunship: Where the Zombie Apocalypse Meets High-Tech Military Weaponry

Posted by Carter Dotson on July 19th, 2011

Most media involving zombie apocalypses has people trying to survive the hordes of undead using any available weapon they can find, from sticks to rifles, along with what may be the most powerful weapon: the perseverance of the human spirit. Limbic's new game Zombie Gunship surmises that there is a more powerful weapon in the fight against the undead hordes, however: a powerful gunship loaded to the teeth with deadly zombie-splattering ordinance.

That's right, in the zombie apocalypse of Zombie Gunship, the player gets to protect a bunker of surviving humans, and the ones trying to get in, from a horde of oncoming zombies. The player sits behind the turret of a gunship circling the area around a bunker. The goal is to keep any zombies from getting in while trying not to kill the civilians getting in. Increasingly large waves of zombies start to attack, and eventually different types of zombies start to attack, including giant hulking zombie enemies. High scores are the name of the game here, as there's currently just one map with one bunker to try to defend. The game could well use other maps with features like different paths for the zombies to try to advance down, and perhaps multiple bunker entry points to protect - perhaps in future updates?

While playing, the game alerts players as to when they exceed their Game Center friends' high scores. Money is earned while playing, which can be used to the powerful 40mm Bofors Gun, and 105mm Howitzer, and upgrades to all the guns to improve damage radius, reloading speed, and firing rate. For players who despise waiting, additional coins can be purchased in the app to buy upgrades right away.

Zombie Gunship is an interesting new take on zombie survival, combining the latest in military destructive technology with the hordes of the undead. Check it out on the App Store starting July 21st.
