Gameloft Lets Slip New Modern Combat 5 Multiplayer Details

Posted by Blake Grundman on May 30th, 2014

At this point, everyone is more than familiar with Gameloft's extremely successful Modern Combat series of first person shooters. That's why it's huge news to hear that the next installment will be renewing the focus on multiplayer.

According to a battle-hardened birdie that just whispered in our ear, the core four multiplayer modes of Capture The Flag, VIP, Free for All, and Team Battle will all be returning. Each mode will allow for up to twelve players on a map at any given time. Along with the use of leaderboards and special in-game events, there will be a new persistent squad system in place. These glorified "clans" will allow players to group up with friends to share in the Team Battle action. There will even be squad chat functionality baked in on day one.

And to whet your whistle that much more, here are a couple of screenshots of what can be expected when the Modern Combat 5 launches, later this summer.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout - Classes and Unified Progression Detailed

Posted by Ellis Spice on May 9th, 2014

Gameloft has announced further details for Modern Combat 5: Blackout, the latest installment in the popular first-person shooter series.

Like previous games in the franchise, the game will feature both a singleplayer and a multiplayer mode. In a first for the series however, progression in both modes will have an impact on each other. Experience points gained will carry over to both modes, unifying progression through the game. Every mission or multiplayer match played will also increase your weapon score, ultimately ending up in the mastery of individual weapons. Better weapons will also unlock as you play and will be available to use in both modes.

Both modes will feature four different solider classes. These classes each have unique augments that can be unlocked using Skill Points earned whenever you level-up. Each class is defined by what weapons they can equip, which can be seen in this short breakdown of each class:

Assault – Aggressive fighter that is effective at medium range combat. Equips assault rifles and pistols.
Heavy – Resilience is the main advantage of this class. Equips shotguns and RPGs and feels comfortable in close to medium combat.
Recon – Focuses on fast action and exposing enemies. Equips SMGs and pistols. Efficient in close range combat.
Sniper – Obviously, focuses on sharpshooting with a stealth approach. Equips sniper rifles and pistols. Efficient in long distance combat.

Details on Modern Combat 5: Blackout are scarce, but we'll be sure to share more when we receive them.

Gameloft's Modern Combat series is one of the biggest names in first-person shooters on the App Store. And with a fifth game on the way (seriously, five games already!) it's really no surprise. What is a little bit of a surprise is that the developer has just dropped the price of Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour.

All this rootin' tootin' shootin' would normally set you back a few bucks, but for the time being you can grab it for a mere $0.99. The way I hear it, the mutiplayer alone is worth more than that. So if you haven't bought Gameloft's most recent military shooter, there's no time like the present.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Announced for iOS - Coming in April Courtesy of Gameloft

Posted by Stephen Hall on March 13th, 2014

Gameloft has announced that it will be the development studio bringing the official The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game to iOS this April when the movie is released. The game will be similar in many ways to Gameloft's original offering, but this sequel is going to be more graphically rich and more detailed in appearance compared to its predecessor. The overall size of the game's open world of Manhattan will be increased as well, giving you more room to sling your web and get the bad guys.

The game is a "premium title," meaning there is almost no chance that it will be a free offering (especially considering it's launching with a movie). But maybe that's for the better; tons of in-app purchases to keep a game sustainable are never fun. Be on the lookout for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for iOS this April, but for now, check out the teaser trailer below.

Pricing Games on the App Store - Premium isn't Dead, Freemium is Here to Stay, and it's Everybody's Fault

Posted by Rob Rich on February 25th, 2014

Ah, the Great App Store Pricing Debate. For years people have been arguing over the cost of mobile games. What constitutes “too much?” Where’s the line when it comes to free-to-play monetization techniques? Should developers have deep discounts and temporary giveaways? Should consumers simply expect everything to go on sale and wait accordingly?

The recent Dungeon Keeper debacle is a good example of this. Gamers and critics alike have railed against it for using various monetization techniques and associating itself with the classic PC strategy series, and many point to it as an unpleasant indication of where the video game industry (especially mobile) is headed. It’s an issue that’s almost as complicated as the initial Freemium vs. Premium debate; so let’s take a closer look at everything and try to make sense of it all.
