CES 2014 - Thinium Unveils Two New Slim and Portable Wall-Mounted Mobile Device Chargers

Posted by Rob Rich on January 7th, 2014

Lugging cables around can often be a bother, as can using said cables to act as a stationary charger for your iPhone. That's why Thinium has been working on a pair of portable chargers called the Thinium Charge and the Thinium ReCharge.

The Thinium Charge is only slightly larger than a credit card and is designed to fit easily into a pocket or even a wallet. Once your phone needs charging you just have to take it out, unfold it, and viola; one wall-mounted iPhone charging station. There's also a USB cable tucked away inside of it that will allow you to charge your device from a computer or any other USB-compatible energy source.

The Thinium ReCharge is essentially the same thing as the Charge with two significant differences. First, it allows you to charge to devices simultaneously. Second, it can also function as a battery backup in the event that you can't find any places to plug in.

The Thinium Charge will be out sometime within the first quarter of 2014 for between $39.99 and $49.99 (depends on the model), and the Thinium ReCharge will follow afterwards and pricing has yet to be announced.

iRig MIC Cast Refines iDevice Recording

Posted by Blake Grundman on June 26th, 2012

Ever since Apple first included a microphone recording application in iOS, people have been stretching the limits of what iOS devices are capable of.  Do they work reasonably as personal recording devices? Absolutely!  But as with any technology, there is a small minority that demands more of the hardware.

This is where the new iRig MIC Cast comes into play.  Gone are the days of sounding like you are sitting in a bathtub, because this handy little peripheral promises to make you sound as clear as day.  The secret is a "unidirectional condenser capsule that isolates the intended audio source, yielding dramatically better results than an integrated microphone."  We couldn't have said it any better ourselves!

Aspiring podcasters on the move will find that this coin sized device could be the answer to all of their prayers, not to mention a mobile studio to boot!  At only $39.99, the iRig MIC Cast is also a bargain, so give it a spin an let us know what you think.  This could be just the evolution you've been waiting for!

Reflection Puts Your iOS Screen on the Mac

Posted by Brad Hilderbrand on March 6th, 2012

One of Apple's coolest features, AirPlay, is also one of its least-utilized. Currently, users can easily stream content from their iOS device right to their Apple TV, and the service will be extended in the new OS X Mountain Lion update to allow Macs to do the same. However, there's never been a way to stream content from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac, until now.

Reflection offers a simple solution to the problem, simply run the app on your Mac, connect your iOS device to the same wireless network, enable AirPlay and viola, you're all set. While you still control all of your iOS apps on their native device, you can now display them on your Mac, which should make for some pretty impressive gaming sessions at the very least.

Reflection will run you $14.99 for a license on a single Mac and $39.99 to install it on up to five separate computers. This being the first version of the app there are still some bugs and crashes, as well as a bit of input lag, but we're sure that will get tuned up in future updates. In any case, we're pretty impressed that someone got AirPlay running from iOS to Mac, and in a surprising twist it wasn't even Apple.

Edge Magazine Now Available Via Newsstand

Posted by Jennifer Allen on October 18th, 2011
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

UPDATE: Edge has just announced via the Newsstand app that the October 2011 issue is now free to download. Head over to the App Store, download the free Edge app, and then download the free back issue today.

Having been a long time subscriber to Edge Magazine, I'm pretty excited to see it be one of the first titles to reach Newsstand.

Available through the app, Edge Magazine promises the same fantastic experience as before. Famous for its intelligent writing and in-depth looks at everything gaming related from reviews to unearthing the latest in the world of game development, Edge Magazine makes for a fascinating read for gaming fans. It's a mature change of pace from glossier magazines but never fails to intrigue.

The Newsstand edition offers enhanced online content with extra insight, related content and screenshot galleries. Linked to the website, if there's anything that can add to the reader's enjoyment on the website, the app lets the user know.

Pricing through Newsstand is pretty respectable with individual issues priced at $4.99, a 3 month subscription available for $12.99, 6 months for $21.99 and a 1 year subscription priced at a very reasonable $39.99.

It's a veritable bargain, given the quality of the writing and a must buy for fans.

Project Management is a Breeze with Simple Genius

Posted by Blake Grundman on February 8th, 2011
iPad App - Designed for iPad

In this day and age it is near impossible to have a job where you are not working under the thumb of some management figure.  Heck, sometimes you have a manager even if you are a manager yourself!  The corporate game of checks and balances often falls to the brains running a project, along with their ability to justify every step followed along the way.  Often times team leaders resort to using Microsoft Project 's unwieldy software suite.  I can speak from experience and testify to the product being a nightmare to use.  What if there was an iPad app that could do all of the heavy lifting for already overburdened project managers?

Developer FourthFrame Technologies saw this niche market, and decided to design a product that specifically meets the demanding needs of the field.  Simple Genius Project Pro has been architected from the ground up to be your one stop solution for all things management, touting features such as:

  • Create multiple projects and manage a portfolio of active projects

  • Create a task schedule for each project with table and Gantt-style views

  • Create and manage Action Items for each project

  • Create and manage Risks for each project

  • Associate Action Items and Risks with tasks in a project schedule

  • Set a cost for each task and view cost-to-date, cost-to-go, and total cost

  • View and study the overall schedule for your suite of active projects

  • Produce customized reports for projects, team members, and a group of projects

  • Email a variety of PDF reports directly to the project team or stakeholders

  • Export or email project data in XML format

It is remarkable how flexible the tool is at meeting any potential need that could arise.  Looking for detailed timelines? Simple Genius has your back.  Worried about planning your project's budget?  Once again, all of your bases are covered.  There is even the ability to export reports that can be used to meet any requirement you could ever encounter.

This could very well be the Swiss Army knife of management tools, so why not give it a shot?  Just be sure that you are in it for the long haul, otherwise the hefty forty dollar pricetag might throw you for a loop.  I guess that is what the company expense account is for, though.
