Generally, a lack of an Undo button sends alarm bells ringing in my head. In the case of Mextures, the app’s makers quite proudly declare the fact during a tutorial, and stating there’s no need for one. Another reason to be concerned. Were they just trying to apologize ahead of time? No, luckily not. Mextures offers plenty of ways to edit images through applying layers, but it’s “non-destructive” meaning it’s easy to go back to the beginning without losing anything, easing any concerns. Even better, it’s a very simple to use photo editing tool.

It’d be easy to dismiss Mextures as yet another way to apply filters to images, but it feels like a lot more than that. Using over 70 different film grain based textures, users can drastically change their images for the better. Throw in the 12 different blending modes and a slider that adjusts the filter’s strengths, and there’s little chance of creating the same look as everyone else. Fortunately, there’s always the option of saving the formula, thereby making it possible to reuse for other images.

mextures8The layer system itself is extremely easy to use. Clearly labelled, it’s easy to keep on applying different filters on top of each other, all in a bid to create something quite spectacular. Due to Mextures‘s focus on making it possible to transfer photos to Instagram, it’s only possible to make square images which might infuriate some, but makes sense given the prevalence of the service.

For those looking for inspiration, there’s a section devoted to other people’s creations, sensibly entitled Inspiration, with it possible to use other people’s filters on one’s own images. The true fun comes from figuring out a new look for one’s self, and it’s always easy to do so. There might be plenty of options but fast results are still easily possible here.

Refreshingly, there’s no sign of an in-app purchase needed to unlock all the filters available. Following an one-off fee idea makes Mextures all the more attractive. Simply put, Mextures provides some fantastic results and is highly satisfying to use. What more could one want from such an app?
