Let Them Come is a pretty cool gallery shooter, but it’s still just a gallery shooter.

Let Them Come is a game that basically puts you in the shoes of a space marine in his last blaze of glory against an overwhelming tide of alien invaders. It’s a game that has a really stylish look, but is otherwise a pretty standard gallery shooter with a decent—though not super enthralling—upgrade system.

Game over man

In Let Them Come, you are stationed at the end of a hallway, and you have to use whatever firepower is at your disposal to kill as many aliens as possible before inevitably meeting your end. Enemies come at you in waves, but they don’t stop coming until you’ve met your end.

When playing the Campaign Mode, death is presents new opportunities. When starting a new game, you can spend currency you’ve earned from killing aliens previously to purchase upgrades that can make your gun more powerful, your soldier a little more responsive, or even get some new kinds of ammo to take out particularly difficult enemies.

Stylized shooting

It’s pretty clear that Let Them Come takes some inspiration from movies like Aliens, shows not just through the game’s premise, but also its look and feel. The hallway you shoot down is creepy and dark, and is only lit up as the muzzle flashes from your weapons reveal that the odds are indeed stacked against you.

Also as you play, some sinister and crunchy synthwave tracks play to further darken the mood. These aesthetic choices aren’t exactly the most original ones in the book, but they work well together here add quite a bit of appeal to Let Them Come’s pretty simple gameplay.

Just off target

Killing aliens is fun and all, but Let Them Come makes it a little too straightforward. Although the game offers various modes, enemy types, upgrades, and powerups, the game still boils down to holding down a trigger and aiming at the aliens that are still moving toward you.

There’s just not that much more to it than that. There is something interesting in seeing all of Let Them Come’s enemies and purchasing all of the upgrades in it, but the things you have to do to see those things just isn’t terribly exciting. You point the gun, you pull the trigger, and you hold it down until you get overrun.

The bottom line

As far as corridor shooters go, Let Them Come is a pretty stylish one. It also has a ton of variety scattered throughout it to try and keep things fresh. The only unfortunate thing though is that Let Them Come’s gameplay is pretty shallow, and all of the style and variety in the world can’t really compensate for that.
