The best mobile games like Pokémon

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 8th, 2022

The latest entry in the mega-popular monster collecting and battling series is here in the form of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In an effort to nakedly capitalize on everyone searching for “games like Pokémon” to recommend some great mobile games, here we are with a list of games fit that exact criteria.

Whether you want just another way to play with the same pocket monsters you know and love, or want something that just takes the underlying features of collecting and battling to different places, this list has you covered with rock solid titles along with reviews to inform your choice.

Monster Hunter Stories ($4.99)

Instead of dismembering monsters to get gear to hunt and kill bigger monsters, Monster Hunter Stories takes Capcom’s hit loot-oriented series in a direction where you befriend, train, and fight alongside beasts like Rathalos and Tigrex. Much like a Pokémon game, you build a lineup of monsters with various strengths and weaknesses, and then try to use that roster to overcome turn-based battles that test your strength and tactical decision-making.

Genshin Impact (Free)

Although folks are quick to say Genshin Impact looks like a Breath of the Wild imitator, it actually has more in common with Pokémon than anything in the realm of Hyrule. moHoYo’s hugely successful open world gacha game is built all around collecting and using teams of adventurers with different elemental affinities. By combining character abilities and elements to cause reactions, you can conquer any challenge Teyvat throws your way.

Pokémon UNITE (Free)

If the thing you want most is a way to play with Snorlax and Pickachu on your phone, Pokémon UNITE is the way to go. This MOBA does a better job of making Pokémon fun on mobile than any other title out there (I’m looking at you, Pokémon GO).

Nexomon ($0.99)

For those that are Pokémon purists and want something that truly approaches the original Game Boy games, Nexomon is here for you. This game gives you the top-down perspective, a set of trainers to battle in certain towns, turn-based battling with an elemental combat system, and over 300 monsters to collect and train. This is really just Pokémon with different monsters, for better and for worse.
