Firemint Kick The Tires of the iPhone 3GS

June 30th, 2009

Firemint gotten their hands on an iPhone 3GS and decided to take it for a little test drive. With it’s increased processor speed, better graphics processor, and extra memory, it’s built for killer games. The best way they came up with to test drive the 3GS was to make a special version of their fantastic racing game, Real Racing to stress it. The normal version of Real Racing has 6 cars on the track at once. Their iPhone 3GS test version has not 12, not 20, but 40 cars on the track at the same time! Take a look at the demo video below for the amazing proof — the real fun starts around 30 seconds in.

Amazing, just amazing. Looks like they might have even been able to put even more cars on the track! If you haven’t picked up Real Racing yet, what are you waiting for? It’s the best arcade game we’ve seen yet for the iPhone.

Announcing the Winners of the Design the Next iPhone Contest

June 15th, 2009

nextiphoneThe new iPhone is here, or will be on Friday. We’ve already covered the big bucket of amazing that is the iPhone 3GS and the huge disappointment that is the horrible carrier we are saddled with here in the US. But, let’s get back to the item at hand, our Design the Next iPhone contest.

As you remember our contest was for you, our faithful readers, to pick the features that you thought would be announced on the next iPhone, the one we now know as the iPhone 3GS. We had a great turnout for entries and before we announce the winners, let’s take a look at some of the most popular things people thought we’d see in the iPhone 3GS but won’t.

The most expected feature that wasn’t announced (yet), was multiple colors other than black and white at 34%. Following that closely was wireless syncing and then multitasking for third party apps.

The least picked features overall were the Apple logo used as a flash and wireless charging (ala the Palm Pre).

Contest Results

A big huge thanks to Griffin Technology for sponsoring our contest. They donated over $200 in great products to use as prizes for this contest.

The first place winner of our contest was John Clayton from Illinois. He’ll be getting a great prize pack from Griffin Technology including a PowerDock4, TuneBuds Mobile, and iTrip AutoPilot.

Second place was won by Shivi Aiyar from California. His prize pack from Griffin Technology includes a Clarifi 3G case, and an AirCurve iPhone stand.

And third place winner got a $15 iTunes gift card. The winner was Raul Escutia.

iPhone 3GS… with a special note from AT&T

June 8th, 2009

compare-iphone-3g-s-screenjpg For those of you keeping up with all of your Apple news today, this won’t come as much of a shock, but the iPhone 3GS has been officially announced and will be available on June 19th. While the phone doesn’t have the often rumored front facing camera, it does have a 3MP camera with auto focus, auto white balance, and a really cool tap to focus feature. Along with that, the iPhone 3GS lets you record 30 fps VGA video with audio, and gives you all the same features that the camera provides. Schiller says that, “I can tap share and send it in an email… (and) if my carrier supports it (AT&T… burn), I can send as an MMS.”

Also included is the new voice control feature which lets you basically talk to your phone, giving you all the more reason to stop talking the people you know and love. If you ask it what song is playing, the phone will happily reply with the song. If you say, play more songs like this, a genius like feature turns on and plays similar songs. The voice command also works with calling, making apps like Vlingo obsolete. Poor, poor Vlingo. Other new features include a built in compass, hardware encryption, and a much needed Nike+ chip. Maybe now I will start running again… thanks Apple.
