Toss It provides moderate amounts of fun in short bursts. A derivative but decent game for when you need a quick pick-me-up.

There are some apps that are meant to be little more than time-wasters when you're at work or sitting on the bus or train, and Toss It is clearly one of those titles. The game sees you simply flicking paper wads at trash cans in variable winds, with the intent of getting the longest streak of consecutive hits possible. It's a blatant ripoff of Paper Toss and offers no real innovation or new features, but it can still be fun in short bursts when you don't feel like diving into deeper fare.

Controls are simple and perfectly functional, all you need to do is swipe the screen in the direction you want the paper to go and the rest takes care of itself. The trick is taking into account wind speed and distance to target, as bins farther away in heavy winds will require a more exaggerated flight plan. Once you get the hang of any particular level it's easy to rack up extremely high scores with minimal extra effort.

The eight levels included in the game create a nice amount of diversity both in location and challenge. No two stages look alike and it's nice to get out of the office setting and into more fanciful locales. The levels never stretch credulity by too much, but it's fun to flick paper wads while in a park or on a boat rather than simply from the viewpoint of a cubicle.

The saving grace of Toss It is the fact that it allows you to challenge other players to beat your high score on any given stage. This added bit of competition can be entertaining for a bit, as you and your bored coworkers send challenges back and forth when you should be slaving away at mind-numbing tasks. Sure, you could actually throw wads of paper into trash bins, but at least on your iPhone you're less likely to get caught. Funny thing about iOS devices, it's easy to make it look as though you're working almost anytime when you're actually slacking off.

If you've already got Paper Toss then there's no need to also download Toss It unless you're some sort of connoisseur of virtual paper hurling games. Otherwise, it's a decent way to spend a dollar if you're looking for something simple and quick. The title isn't spectacular, but it does manage to fill a niche.
