Simple but to the point, Birthdays for iPhone sets out to ensure that owners of the app need never forget a loved one’s birthday, providing they have a Facebook account. It’s quick and easy to use making it a sound purchase for those in need.

Based around Facebook‘s API, users require a Facebook account to set the app up. Once logged in, a colorful list of dates appear on screen, comprising of each friend’s photo, name and birth date. Where the relevant information has been added, the age of the friend is also included.

Arranged chronologically, users can scroll up and down to check whose birthday is when. Birthdays for the current date are highlighted in yellow for extra convenience. At a tap of a name, details about the birthday can be added to the iOS calender with a reminder set. If the birthday is today, the user can post a message to that person from within the app, saving the need to log into Facebook through a separate account.

There are some limitations in terms of searching. There’s a dedicated search function which works well, but there’s no ability to filter the opening list. Being able to view alphabetically or by age would have been convenient, but instead users are restricted to chronological. This is fine for those with a low number of friends but for others with hundreds, it can get laborious.

Minor gripes aside and Birthdays for iPhone happily falls into the “does exactly what anyone could expect of it” camp of iOS apps. There are no extra and unnecessary additions to this app. It’s simple yet mostly effective. For the forgetful sort, Facebook has done wonders to ensure they don’t forget a friend’s birthday. For the extra forgetful sort, Birthdays for iPhone should reinforce that for an inexpensive price.
