MazeArt Review

iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad

MazeArt is an interesting app made up of twelve mazes, all of which include a 3D character who needs help finding their way. Trace though each maze with a finger and the character will follow. Each maze has its own theme, and when solved, a short video with 3D animation is played.

I always enjoyed mazes as a kid and still do today. Mazes are great educational tools for boosting problem-solving and spacial acuity skills, as well as giving fine motor skills a workout. What I really like about this app is that it also teaches how to navigate by reading a map - a very important skill to have.

At first, I had some problems working my way through these mazes, but with some practice and patience I have gotten the hang of it and really enjoy them. I do find it a little frustrating that your perspective gets turned around in the maze every time you remove your finger from the  screen.  This does make the player rely on the map to help situate himself, and it shows off the 3D animation nicely, but I find this needlessly disorienting and can make game play complicated. However, after playing for a while, it is possible to work through this and have fun.

I like that the route taken in the maze is also outlined in the map, but after back-tracking your steps a few times, the map is so marked up it is almost impossible to read. I would love to be able to erase these markings so you can see what you are looking at.

I enjoy this app and I am glad I kept up with it.  With some practice, kids will be able to master these and help learn some very important skills as well.
