This beautiful display of pixel art combines the best parts of both space shooter and RPGs to create a fantastic space opera. There's plenty of base-building, compelling characters, and a well-crafted story that will draw you in straight away. Gameplay gets pretty difficult the further you progress, but Gemini Strike gives plenty of incentive to perservere.

Galaga found its way back onto the App Store in shiny new packaging this year, and it's never looked better. One part space shooter, one part rhythm game, Beat Hazard Ultra lets you pipe in music from your own library to set the scene. The game builds a level around each track, providing you hundreds of unique challenges if you so choose. It's like Space Invaders meets Audiosurf. Need we say more?

ARC Squadron: Redux

ARC Squadron: Redux is a visual stunner, but it's also got clever level design and finely-tuned controls to really seal the deal. As usual, you're the galaxy's only hope for salvation, hunting down the nine Guardian lords and preventing impending mass-destruction. There're extra ship upgrades and challenge levels if you need that extra icing on the cake.
